Japanese craftsmanship

Japanese eyewear is renowned for being some the most refined in the world. In fact, Japanese eyewear making is considered part of the cultural heritage.

The vast majority of Japanese frames are handcrafted in Fukui and Sabae, benefiting from unique ancestral expertise that dates back to 1905 for the oldest manufacturers. Masunaga, Matsuda and Eyevan are among the most iconic Japanese eyewear designers.

Avant-garde, minimalist and precise, Japanese designers showcase a style that is elegant, understated, and sophisticated. They all share a commitment to detail and a precision, worthy of haute eyewear craftsmanship. Japanese eyewear has successfully combined tradition and innovation. Drawing inspiration from its ancestral culture, it blends contemporary lines with vintage details, resulting in an unparalleled finesse.

Japanese manufacturing has been built around titanium. The mastery of this noble material is known as “guilloche”. Invented by the Japanese, this technique involves intricate hand-engraving on a piece that serves as a mold for the making the eyewear. Japanese artisans also like to incorporate precious alloys to coat the titanium, giving it a beautiful patina. They pay meticulous attention to details so that each frame is imbued with passion and seriousness, reflecting their values in their work.

Japanese eyewear makers also excel in the production of acetate, which they refer to as the  “genius of nature”. Their acetate is further filtered and dried longer than Italian acetate, making it denser. Combined with manual bamboo polishing, it becomes shinier and more durable over time.

After assembly, each pair of glasses undergoes a rigorous quality control process to ensure the level of finish meets Japanese standards.
