l.a.Eyeworks : a 46-year story
The story of l.a.Eyeworks began with a chance encounter with the world of eyewear in the 1970s, when Gai Gherardi and her best friend Barbara McReynolds took jobs at an optical shop to fund a trip. Their boss, Ed Rose, taught them the basics of the trade, sparking a passion for eyewear. Inspired by classic aviator styles and lifeguard sunglasses, they began to customise vintage frames, embracing a minimalist, unisex approach that baffled salespeople of the time.
In 1979, they opened their first store on Melrose Avenue, transforming an old lacquering booth into a unique place with the help of family and friends. This one quickly became a gathering place for a diverse community, hosting art exhibitions and cultural events. By 1981, they started designing their own frames, naturally collaborating with fashion photographers to promote their boutique in trendy magazines. They thrived at the intersection of fashion and art, especially within Los Angeles’ vibrant scene.
l.a.Eyeworks is also a socially engaged brand, committed to public interest initiatives. Their mission extends beyond crafting eyewear—it aims to transform how people see and interact with the world. Their dedication to sustainability and ethics is reflected in their holistic approach to design and production.
Since its inception, l.a.Eyeworks has operated with a pioneering spirit, valuing in-store experiences and human connections. Today, despite changing consumer habits, the brand continues to champion the importance of physical stores and personal interactions, emphasising that buying glasses is an experience beyond mere commerce.
