Vision care professions
From diagnosis to the making of your glasses, discover the various healthcare professionals who take care of your visual comfort.
When visual discomfort occurs, the first step is to consult an ophthalmologist. This is the medical specialist in ocular health and the visual system.
They will:
• Diagnose and treat ocular diseases: cataract, glaucoma, AMD, conjunctivitis...
• Prescribe optical corrections for corrective lenses
• Perform contact lens fittings and prescribe them
• Perform medical or surgical procedures: laser, injections, surgery...
• Monitor chronic eye conditions
When an ophthalmologist detects a potential binocular vision disorder, they prescribe an orthoptic assessment to be performed by an orthoptist. Their role is to diagnose the type of binocular vision disorder the patient has. They determine the most appropriate solution so the patient can regain clear, comfortable, and effortless vision with both eyes open.
Based on the results of the tests, the orthoptist suggests either a therapy, prisms to be incorporated into the lenses by the optician, or the use of an eye patch. These various solutions aim to rebalance the oculomotor muscles to achieve comfortable vision with both eyes open.
The orthoptist can also perform visual examaminations and issue appropriate prescriptions within a regulated framework under the supervision of the ophthalmologist.
The final step is to visit your optician.
Their role is:
• To Advise you on choosing your lenses and frames based on your preferences, needs, and physiology
• To Ensure comfort is met with the new prescription
• To Take the measurements needed for your glasses
• To Order the lenses and glaze them to fit the chosen frame
• To Adjust your new glasses to your morphology and maintain them throughout their lifespan
Your optician can advise you on the handling and care of your contact lenses. They can also perform a visual examination and adjust your correction within the legal validity of your prescription.
