Stages of visual development in children

Visual development in children is a complex process that occurs in several stages, from birth to school age. The maturation of the visual system is achieved by the age of 7.

At birth, a newborn sees blurry and in black and white. However, they can focus on objects 20-30 cm away and are already sensitive to light. Eye coordination begins to improve from 2 months of age. A baby can then follow objects in motion, and images start to be perceived in colour. By 6 months, the perception of depth and color vision improves, allowing the baby to distinguish finer details and recognise familiar faces from farther away.

From 6 months on, the muscles become more toned, and hand-eye coordination, which allows grasping and manipulating objects, improves. The coordinated vision of the eyes becomes more refined. A baby can now follow fast-moving objects and has a better perception of depth, which helps their mobility.

Even though by 1 year of age a child already has a visual capacity almost as developed as an adult's, it continues to improve. The perception of details becomes increasingly precise. Toddlers already have a better spatial understanding and recognise shapes and colours. The acquisition of fine motor skills facilitates activities like drawing or building games.

After 2 years of age, the coordination between vision and other senses improves, which helps in physical activities such as running, jumping, and catching a ball. Visual function continues to improve until it reaches maturity, generally around 6 to 7 years of age. Vision plays a crucial role in learning to read and write, with an increased ability to recognize letters and words. Visual skills are now well established, allowing children to participate in school and sports activities that require precise and coordinated vision.

Each step is crucial for acquiring essential visual skills that will enable the child to understand and interact with their environment. Regular monitoring and eye exams by a pediatric ophthalmologist are important to detect and correct any visual anomalies from an early age.
