The french eyewear craftsmen
France, a country renowned for haute couture and luxury, is also celebrated for its expertise in eyewear. With genuine artisanal craftsmanship, French eyewear makers are recognised worldwide for their quality and creativity.
Being an eyewear craftsman means mastering a complex production process, from selecting materials (cellulose acetate, titanium, metal, etc.) to polishing, including cutting and assembly. Each pair of glasses can require over a hundred manufacturing steps.
The revolution began in the early 1980s, when Alain Mikli disrupted the conservative French eyewear industry. He transformed glasses from mere "prosthetics" into true design objects! Jacques Durand worked alongside him for years before branching out on his own.
The new generation is equally innovative. Lucas de Staël pushes the boundaries of design in his Parisian workshop, using unconventional materials like leather and stone. Xavier Derome personally crafts his acetate sheet collages in his Sologne workshop, making it his signature. Ahlem Manai-Platt, an architecture enthusiast, draws inspiration from the Bauhaus movement, with its influences visible in the details of her glasses.
French eyewear continues to shine, thanks to its unique blend of tradition, design, and innovation!
